Arlington, TX (July, 19, 2011)—In response to record bedbug activity in the southwest, the Texas Pest Control Association (TPCA) has partnered with BedBug Central to create an educational conference for the region to provide critical information for combating bedbugs.

The conference is titled, “BedBug Academy of the Southwest” and will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Arlington, TX from July 28 to July 30. The conference will provide pest management firms, businesses and the public with the strategies and tools needed to eliminate bedbugs and help reduce infestations and exposure.

According to Errol Cohen of the TPCA, having a regional bedbug conference this year is essential as the southwest has been experiencing a notable increase in bedbug activity.

“Earlier this year we noticed a considerable uptick in bedbug activity throughout Texas and other parts of the southwest region,” said Cohen. “This conference will be an important step in ensuring that everyone is familiar with the best practices for effective bedbug management. This will help us better serve our communities and help our communities better protect themselves.”

Courses will include in-depth demonstrations of the latest bedbug tools and technologies; treatment protocol development; bedbug biology and behavior, legal challenges and more. Attendees will have access to 38 vendors displaying state-of-the-art bedbug control products and equipment.

The TPCA and industry leader BedBug Central of Lawrenceville, NJ have recruited five of the leading entomologists and bedbug management experts to educate attendees on these topics. Speakers include:

  • Dr. Dini Miller, Professor of Entomology for Virginia Tech University
  • Dr. Phillip Koehler, Professor of Entomology for Florida University
  • Jeffrey White, M.S., Research Entomologist for BedBug Central
  • Katie A Johnson, Ph.D., Microbiologist for Research Associates Laboratory
  • Phil Cooper, CEO of BedBug Central and National Pest Management Association Board Member
According to research entomologist Jeffrey White of BedBug Central, educational conferences will be particularly important as the southwest region of the country continues to face increased bedbug activity.

“The creation of this conference represents both initiative and foresight from the Texas Pest Control Association,” said White. “These educational conferences will be an important step in minimizing the negative effects of bedbugs as they become increasingly pervasive in the southwest.”

The BedBug Academy is open to the public and businesses in addition to pest management firms. For more information about this event, visit the TPCA at http://www.texaspest.org/.
