What is the PackTite™ and how does it work?
Watch an entomologist overview of PackTite™ (live link is embedded, it MUST be this specific link)
The PackTite™ is essentially a personal heat chamber that is designed to kill all stages of bed bugs and bed bug eggs that may have infested your luggage or personal items. The unit works by creating an enclosure that circulates heated air at sustained temperatures in excess of 120 degrees for a specified duration of time. Once the cycle is complete, items placed in the PackTite™ will have been heat treated, effectively making the item bed bug free.
Features:
Collapsible Design- The PackTite™ unit was engineered with a durable metal wireframe and a polyester-canvas covering that is designed to collapse for easy storage and transport. When expanded, the PackTite™ can accommodate both bulky luggage and variety of sizable and awkwardly shaped personal items.
What does this really mean? The collapsible design makes the unit easily storable and transportable when not in use. When collapsed, the PackTite™ measures a scant 36 in. x 8 in. L x 24 in. H. When fully expanded, the unit measures 36 in. x 19 in. L x 24 in. H. With dimensions this small, the PackTite™ can become a mobile heat treatment chamber.
Thermal Recirculation Unit- The thermal recirculation unit housed in the PackTite™ was designed to generate sustained heat in excess 120 degrees while engendering an air current to ensure that the heat permeates any potential hiding places and cold spots where bed bugs and their eggs may survive.
What does this really mean? To effectively apply a heat treatment for bed bugs, all portions of the item must be held at a sustained heat in excess 120 degrees. Luggage and personal items may have “cool spots” due to their shape characteristics and folds. The PackTite™ heating unit not only generates the necessary amount of sustained heat, it also continuously circulates the heat to help ensure that every portion of your personal item is effectively treated.
Electronic Timer- Once activated, each PackTite™ unit will run the heat treatment process and shutdown automatically by the electronic timer.
What does this really mean? The electronic timer designed into the PackTite™ effectively removes any guess work as to when the treatment duration of the treatment has ended. Once you plug in and start the unit, there is no need to “babysit”. The PackTite™ will continue to operate until the timer automatically turns it off. It is as simple as “set it and forget it.”
Electronic Thermometer- The PackTite™ unit includes a calibrated electronic thermometer that enables you to monitor the internal temperature of the Packtite and your items/luggage to verify that lethal temperatures have been reached.
What does this really mean? As the PackTite™ runs its heat treatment cycle, you will want to sample the various surface areas of you luggage or personal items to confirm that they have reached optimal temperatures. This will be the most important step in the heat treatment process.
Why do you need a PackTite™?
Treating infested items- The PackTite™ will be an invaluable tool for individuals who have items that are infested with bed bugs. This unit will help you prevent needlessly discarding or destroying your personal items that are infested. The PackTite™ will also allow you to preemptively treat items that you suspect to be infested with bed bugs.
Proactive Treatments: It is often the case that bed bug heat treatments are reactive. The PackTite™ affords the ability to preemptively heat treat your possessions. Instead of taking the chance to find out if your luggage has been infested during a trip you, can treat these items before they are introduced into your home and avoid infestation entirely.
Who will benefit the most from the PackTite™: Individuals who travel frequently or have overnight guests and visitors will benefit greatly from the PackTite™. This may also include parents with college students, business and leisure travelers, home health care providers as well as well as residents in various communal living settings.
